About the film

 

Synopsis: Three Detroiters navigate chronic illnesses in a city where public health has long been neglected, forcing them to rely on charity healthcare to live. When the pandemic hits, we are forced to consider: Is free care a solution or a symptom of a broken system?

 

The team behind “Alive in Detroit” is comprised of an experienced, diverse set of artists, storytellers and researchers.

Shiraz Ahmed, Director and Producer, is a visual artist and award-winning journalist based in Hamtramck, Mich. He has produced journalism for 101.9 WDET, Detroit’s NPR Station, MLK50: Justice Through Journalism and Texas Monthly, and his documentary work has been exhibited during Detroit Art Week, Delectricity and at Photoville in Brooklyn. He is a Kartemquin Diverse Voices in Docs Fellow (2019), Documenting Detroit Fellow (2018) and graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

Desmond Love, Director of Photography, is an award-winning cinematographer born-and-raised in Detroit. He was DP on the short documentary “Sidelots” (Allied Media Conference, 2018) and has directed and produced films such as “Swollen” and “Freshwater” (Freep Film Festival selections, 2022), and for clients such as Detroit Narrative Agency, Kresge Arts in Detroit and Mural Arts Philadelphia.


Eleanore Catolico, Associate Producer, is a community journalist who has reported on municipal issues for Chalkbeat, WDET, and Yes! Magazine. She is a Maynard Storytelling Fellow (2021).

Karalyn Kiessling, Researcher, is a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She focuses on the politics of tobacco and vaping legislation, but is interested in promoting health equity more broadly.

Myron Watkins, Camera Operator, was born in Detroit, Michigan, where he has made his name as a photographer, filmmaker, and community curator. His work can be seen in projects such as "Strange Fruit: The Tale of a Black Girl Lost" (2021), the Detroit Public Schools production "We Went To Work - Courage Over COVID" (2022), and the Emmy Award-winning "Detroit: One Nation Under A Groove."
