Documenting Detroit - Alive in Detroit (2018)

Photography

As part of the Documenting Detroit early career photojournalist fellowship, I documented free and subsidized healthcare initiatives for uninsured and underinsured people living in the city. Over three months, I embedded in spaces such as free clinics, chapels and church basements and at health fairs photographing AIDS/HIV testing, homelessness and LGBTQ+ health initiatives. This is part of an ongoing exploration of society’s attempts and failure to ameliorate poor health conditions for low-income and other marginalized groups.

The resulting photo essay was projected on the Detroit Institute of Arts and as part the the Delectricity light and art festival and photos were included in the One Voice Photo Festival on Homelessness in Manchester, England and at Photoville in Brooklyn, New York, and have been published by Detour Detroit and 101.9 WDET, Detroit’s NPR Station.
